Hydration and Stretching

The weather is starting to change for the better in El Paso and many of our patients at El Paso Physical Therapy Services will become increasingly active as the weather permits. As things warm up, it’s important to remember to keep hydrated.

How much do you need to drink to be properly hydrated? There are several factors to consider, including heat, humidity, sweat rate and length of time of activity. The following is a guideline from the American Council on Exercise on how much water to consume before, during and after exercise.

17-20 ounces of water 2-3 hours prior to exercise

8 ounces of water 20-30 minutes before exercise or during your warm-up

7 -10 ounces of water every 10-20 minutes during exercise

8 ounces of water within 30 minutes after exercise

Stretching is important as well. Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you call on the muscles for activity, they are weak and unable to extend all the way. That puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage.

The staff at El Paso Physical Therapy Services is here for you and can assist you with proper stretching techniques..
