What to Do About Shoulder Instability

The staff at El Paso Physical Therapy Services knows the important benefits of keeping in shape. Many of our patients choose physical activities like working out and playing sports. Unfortunately, certain activities can result in unforeseen injuries.

One common injury that some of our patients experience is shoulder instability. Shoulder instability is a problem that occurs when the structures that surround the shoulder joint do not work to keep the ball tightly within its socket. If the joint is too loose, it may slide partially out of place, a condition called shoulder subluxation. If the joint comes completely out of place, this is called a shoulder dislocation. Patients with shoulder instability often complain of an uncomfortable sensation that their shoulder may be about to shift out of place

Anybody is susceptible to shoulder instability. Athletes, such as volleyball players, swimmers, and baseball pitchers, stretch out their shoulder capsule and ligaments and may develop chronic shoulder instability.

Fortunately, there are some exercises you can perform to help relieve some of the discomfort of shoulder stability:

  • Lie on your back, holding a wand with both hands. Your palms should face down as you hold the wand.
  • Keeping your elbows straight, slowly raise your arms over your head. Raise them until you feel a stretch in your shoulders, upper back, and chest.
  • Hold for 15 to 30 seconds.
  • Repeat 2 to 4 times.

The staff at El Paso Physical Therapy Services is here for you, especially If you think that you are suffering from shoulder instability or any other discomfort that stems from physical activity.
