Fall Prevention

As we age, the body begins to lose control of that righting series, and eventually, balance reactions can become sluggish and less responsive, resulting in an increased risk of falls. The Falls Prevention program is specially designed to help individuals maintain or increase their independence and identify individuals who may be
at risk of falling.

Falls are the most common cause of emergency room visits among older adults. When the body is thrown off balance, there are a normal series of specific “righting reactions” the body goes through to keep itself from falling.

Standardized balance testing determines the basis for the program methods and goals. The program includes specific exercises, strength, flexibility, and proper gait, to maintain balance and prevent falls.

Fall Prevention with EPPTS can help to:

  • Address loss of strength, mobility, and coordination
  • Return to independent living after a fall
  • Improve balance to reduce the risk of a fall

What to Expect

Our certified clinicians will evaluate your risk of falling by assessing balance, mobility, and strength. A personalized plan of care will be designed to meet your individual needs and help you achieve your goals.

Balance training exercises will be used to help the body “practice” the balance righting series and allow reaction times to be more automatic, decreasing the risk of falls. Dynamic strengthening exercises will also prepare the body to respond and react to a loss of balance with less risk of falling.

Recommendations will be made to address factors in the home, work, and community environments that may contribute to increased fall risk.

Pediatric Therapy

Through our Pediatric Therapy program, we help children, with injuries or orthopedic conditions, lead fuller lives. Our clinical team of orthopedic-trained physical therapists will design a specialized plan of care that is right for your child.

Our Osteoporosis program focused on improving balance, strength, flexibility, functional abilities, and posture for patients while reducing the risk of falls.

Osteoporosis is a disease that affects people of all ages, sex, and ethnic background. Osteoporosis results in the reduction of bone mass where bones become fragile and can easily fracture. It primarily affects the hip, vertebral column, and wrists.

Twenty-eight million Americans, 80% of which are women, have osteoporosis or osteopenia. Some of the first signs are a decrease in height, protruding abdomen, postural changes, and/or fractures.

Common risk factors for osteoporosis include:

  • Family History
  • Post Menopausal women
  • Thin or obese women
  • Sedentary lifestyles
  • Over exercisers
  • Taking thyroid and/or steroid medication
  • Smoking
  • Eating disorders
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetes

How we help:

  • Gait and Balance Assessments to identify factors that may lead to falls
  • Body Mechanics Training to help prevent flexion stresses on the vertebral bodies
  • Posture Assessment to address stresses on the spine during non-movement
  • Exercise to strengthen spinal muscles and improve bone density

Until you get to physical therapy:

  • Avoid bending at the waist
  • Avoid twisting
  • Avoid prolonged sitting
  • Utilize good body mechanics with your daily activities
